Biography	In 1951 Farnworth’s Kathleen became the first woman to swim Lake Windermere and she made her first English Channel crossing a year later. She failed to repeat the feat in a 1953 Butlins-sponsored race when the tide turned but was declared the winner as she was closest to shore.
