Ephraim Longworth was born in Halliwell on October 2nd 1887.On the 1901 Census his occupation is listed as a cotton piecer but he found the time to play football locally for Chorley Road Congregationals, St Lukes and Halliwell Rovers. He rapidly progressed as an amateur with Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire Combination and then with Leyton Orient in the Southern League. He joined Liverpool in 1910, making his League Division One debut on 19th September against Sheffield United. Ephraim went on to play 371 games for Liverpool earning him the title of a prince among full backs, and a place in the Liverpool Hall of Fame - although he never scored a goal! During his 18 year career he captained the club with distinction, winning two championship medals (1921/2 and 1922/3) and an FA Cup runners up medal (1914), He was the first Liverpool player ever to captain England and was capped seven times for the national team, including two Victory Internationals organised by the Football League. He played his final game for Liverpool on April 21st 1928 as a 40 year old. He joined the Liverpool coaching staff the following year and finished his association with the club as a member of the Anfield ground staff.
