Biography With a career spanning twenty years Stan Hanson was the Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper either side of the Second World War making more than 500 appearances.
Bootle born Stan signed for Bolton in 1936 making his debut aged 19. His career came to an abrupt halt when he spent six years with the eighth army also representing the army in goal and occasionally at outside left most notably against the Yugoslavia army scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory.

Stans career highlights came in the early 50s where in 1952 he was a member of the FA tour of Canada earning his single England cap and where he suffered his greatest career disappointment as a member of the losing 1953 FA final team.

Two days after his 40th birthday Stan played his last game for the Wanderers.

His playing career now over Stan remained a familiar face at the club and the town by becoming subpostmaster at the post office directly opposite Burnden Park and also becoming part time trainer for the Wanderers junior teams.

Stan passed away in 1987 and is remembered as a modest and unassuming gentleman. A one-club man for his entire professional career never booked or sent off.
