Joe was born in 1904 and was described by Nat Lofthouse at Bolton's greatest ever sportsman and his hero. Joe fought more than 560 bouts in boxing's golden age of the Twenties and Thirties. He had his first fight at the age of 8 with the contest consisting of nine boys boxing each other and the last man standing; in this case Joe, was declared the winner. During a career which often saw him boxing in bouts of 20 and 30 rounds Joe beat two world champions and six european champions but corrupt practices are blamed for him never landing a title shot. Following retirement, Joe started coaching the Lads Club boxing team in 1940 which he continued to do until after the War.
