In 2005-06 Big Sam enjoyed the distinction of being the first manager in the club's history to lead out a Wanderers side in a competitive European fixture. In 1999 he returned to manage the club the club he signed for as a 15 year old boy and in his first season in charge guided Wanderers to the semi-finals of the FA Cup, League Cup and the First Division playoffs and the following season took the team back into the Premiership. Now regarded as one of the Premiership's most forward thinking managers he was shorlisted for the England manager's job in 2006.
