Biography

Bolton’s favourite son is best remembered for his two goal performance against Austria in 1952 that earned him the nickname, the Lion of Vienna. The epitome of a one club man – he later had a number of spells as the Wanderers manager – saw him score over 300 goals for Bolton including the two that beat Manchester United in the 1958 cup final and one that could not stop Blackpool beating his team 4-3 in the final but completed his remarkable record of having scored in every round. Scored 30 goals for his country.
