Brian joined Bolton Olympic Wrestling Club at the age of six years and entered his first competition at the age of eight years. He went on to win his first British Championships as a schoolboy in 1970 and to represent Great Britain in the World Schoolboy Championships in Peru where he won Gold. He first represented Great Britain at senior level when aged 17. He won his first British Senior Championship at 20 years old and, thereafter, won eight British Senior titles. He represented England at four Commonwealth Games in 1978, 1982, 1986 and 1996. The Gold medal he captured at the 1982 Games is one of only four ever to be won by an English competitor. Brian represented Great Britain in two European Championships in 1983 and 1984 in which year he won the silver medal, the first medal ever to be won by a British competitor. Brian competed in two Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984. Brian acted as Bolton Olympic Wrestling Coach from 1986 to 1996. In addition to club coaching, he was appointed as British National Coach in 1985 and also devoted a considerable amount of time to coaching at national level from 1985 until 1996. Throughout his wrestling career Brian consistently gave up his spare time to raise money for local charities and organisations by giving wrestling exhibitions. |
